PURA VIDA
Bustling with surf, sun, and action, Playa Jaco is a famous beach town in Costa Rica. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, Jaco’s black sand beach is protected by two rocky points on each end. This protection blunts the power of incoming swells, making Jaco a great beginner and intermediate surf spot. Beachgoers will enjoy the incredible sunsets, the palm-tree dotted coast and the flying scarlet macaws.
Located right in the center of the country’s Pacific Coast and a mere hour and a half drive from San Jose, Jaco is within driving distance to all major attractions in the country. As a major location for both national and international tourism, Playa Jaco offers many more conveniences than other beach towns along the Pacific Coast – grocery stores, farmer’s markets, restaurants, bars, gyms, shops, and more all within walking distance.
About two miles long, Jaco’s strip of beach is covered with fine black sand. The salty Pacific Ocean is invitingly warm and usually calm enough for casual swimming. On days where the swell is bigger swimmers should watch out for rip-tides. Beachgoers are protected by Jaco’s Guardavidas (lifeguards) who do an excellent job of keeping swimmers and surfers safe.
Early morning is great for a beach walk before the sun gets too hot and afternoons promise incredible sunsets. Jaco is an active town and you’ll find people enjoying the beach in various ways: surfing, horseback riding, running, volleyball, soccer, beach yoga, and more!
Only ten minutes south of Jaco, Playa Hermosa is a sleepy surf town famous for its strong swells. Waves are larger, stronger, and faster in Playa Hermosa – beginners beware. This break is for advanced surfers only.
Ten minutes north of Jaco you will find Playa Herradura, a small fisherman’s town. Los Suenos Mariana is located here as well as some upscale shops and restaurants.
Playa Esterillos is about 25 minutes south of Jaco and is a great spot for intermediate to advanced surfers. It is also a great place for beachgoers to visit as it has beautiful tide pools, long stretches of sand, and a few beach-front restaurants.
Jaco is famous for its surf – 365 days a year, you’ll find surfable waves rolling on to shore. While the southern part of the beach is great for beginners, larger swells promise fun and challenge to intermediate and advanced surfers.
At Jaco Inn, we offer beginner surf lessons, surf coaching for intermediate and advanced surfers, and surf camps. Surfing is our passion and we love sharing it with our guests. If you’re interested in learning how to surf, don’t hesitate to inquire about our lessons and packages!
